What Are Urethane Coatings?
They are a fortification product, designed to add an additional layer of protection to roofing. Roofing materials are designed to withstand and protect your structure from outdoor elements, such as the sun and weather. However, over time, conditions wear down the materials and they need to be repaired and replaced. A coating is like getting a new roof at a fraction of the cost.

Advantages of Urethane Coatings
  • Extends the life of roofing components by more than 20 years. Protects materials from outdoor conditions, allowing them a longer lifespan.
  • One of the few coating compounds that can be used with concrete and wood materials. Urethane is safe to use on both concrete and wood, something other types of coatings are not designed to do.
  • Helps prevent leaks and waterproofs a building. It creates a seamless surface preventing water damage and water intrusion.
  • Makes your building more energy efficient. Seals all of the cracks and crevices in the roof where air would escape, keeping air conditioned or heated air inside the building and reducing your energy usage and costs.

When Can Urethane Coatings Be Used?
They can be applied as part of installation of a new roof. And they can be used on an older roof as long as it is in relatively good condition. Broken or damaged tiles and shingles must be replaced prior to applying the compound. The surface should be structurally sound with undamaged sheathing and tresses prior to installation. The product can extend the life of used materials; however, it cannot repair broken or damaged items and should not be used in lieu of proper repairs.

The Installation Process
Urethane coatings are applied in a liquid form. The installer can paint, roll, or spray the material evenly onto the roof and then allow it to dry. While it sounds simple enough, the process is actually a bit more difficult. The painting or spreading of the material must be done evenly. If it is not applied uniformly, the product will harden unevenly, which can cause water to puddle, pool or fail to flow properly from the roof. Removing urethane once it has dried is very difficult and costly. Some commercial building owners make the mistake of having the coating applied by their maintenance staff. They think it is going to save them money, only to end up having to hire a roof contractor to fix their work, which costs them more in the long run. You are better off hiring a company to do it for you. Call us now.

Different Types Available
Urethane coatings are not the only type of roof protection available. Other types include:
  • Asphalts
  • Emulsions
  • Acrylic elastomers
  • Silicones
  • SPF

Each has specific advantages and disadvantages. Call your professional roof contractor to find out which is best for you. Some last longer but are more expensive, whereas others are designed or better-utilized with only certain roofing materials.
